Yukon Refugees

A coordinated approach by the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon (MCY)

Syria crisis: Fast facts

  • 12 million Syrians have fled their homes because of conflict; half are children.
  • 4 million Syrians are refugees; most are in Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan.
  • More than 700,000 Syrian refugees and other migrants risked their lives this year to travel to Europe.

Syria's civil war is the worst humanitarian disaster of our time. More than half the population of Syria are either refugees or internally displaced.

Immigrant and refugee serving agencies across Canada are ramping up contingency plans to respond to the largest refugee resettlement movement in thirty five years.

The Multicultural Centre of the Yukon (MCY), along with its partners across Canada, have been collaborating on the Syrian refugee resettlement initiative for the past few months.

Our role is to work with partners, including all levels of government, umbrella organizations, settlement service agencies, and private sponsors by offering our settlement expertise to ensure Syrian refugees receive the resettlement, settlement, and integration support they need. The Syrian Refugee Working Group (SRWG) has been created by the Yukon Government to assist in facilitating this in the Yukon.

MCY is overwhelmed and encouraged by the level of concern expressed by the community towards the situation faced by the Syrian refugees. We would like to thank everyone for reaching out with offers to get involved or to provide assistance of any kind. If you are interested in providing support to the refugees please contact the Yukon Government.
